The two nations signed the 2011 India-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership Agreement to help build infrastructure, educational institutions, encourage investment, and provide duty-free access to Indian market. India Afghanistan bilateral trade stands at $1 billion currently. India built roads, dams, electricity transmission network and substations, schools and even the Afghan Parliament. India shared a robust relationship and solid people-to-people contacts with the SAARC nation. India’s efforts in the region of the last 20 years seem all but done in the last few days. In such a scenario, India can only watch the horror unfold faced with a situation when it might not even have a diplomatic mission in the country as insurgents take over. The US retreated in haste from Afghanistan and Taliban troops took control of the presidential palace in Kabul after seizing province after another all in a matter of weeks.
